Those who apply for and are accepted to be in the proposal group will be expected to work throughout the semester on a project of their choosing. We will meet as a group to discuss work in progress on a regular basis. Students in this group will be expected to produce a higher level project. The specifics of each final project will be discussed with me. In addition to prints, students will be expected to present an artists statement and slides or digital files of their work.

Semester Assignment/
Final Project

It is assumed that you are creating work in addition to assignments throughout the semester. This work will lead to a Final project index of no less than 12 images on the same subject presented at the final crit. Week 12 you will email me a proposal for your final project. Please feel free to consult me throughout the semester as you are working to show me in-progress images and talk about your ideas. The sooner you begin to explore what you would like to create for the final, the more comprehensive and successful it will be.

Additional assignments may be given as deemed appropriate to the semester progress.

See syllabus for crit dates.

WebX & Email

You will be expected to participate in online discussions via WebX with both readings and images. You will be expected to discuss your own ideas and to respond to other's postings. We will discuss the logistics of this in class. You will be evaluated on the quality not only the quantity of your participation.

All communication about this class will take place via email - please know how to use your UMD email address, check in often and allow at least 24 hours for an email response (48 on the weekend).

see syllabus for due dates

Classroom participation

You will be expected to participate in class by being in class, being vocal during discussions and being active in presenting work and criticizing work. It is expected that everyone talk at least once about each person's work during crits and has at least one thing to contribute regarding readings or what ever subject matter is being presented. A strong discussion is comprised of varied viewpoints and tolerance for eachother's opinions. A useful crit will investigate both the strength's and weaknesses of an individual's work. Again, you will be evaluated on the quality of your participation.

Lack of participation can often mean the difference between an A and B student.

Attendance

Attendance is considered as an aspect of class participation. You will be expected to be in class and on time every day. An exception to this are certain open lab days. Please check in prior to missing a lab day to ensure there is no demo rescheduled for that day. Keep in mind that you are only guaranteed lab time and contact time during class lab time and that being in lab during class time will reflect on your participation.

Demos will happen only once, so you should be advised to not miss those classes. It will be your responsibility to catch up on any information that is missed in class.

Review of Artist Lectures
You will be expected to review two lectures from the Art & Design lecture series. One of these reviews should be the Jane Calvin lecture and show (please see me if you are unable to fulfill this requirement). The other will be optional. Reviews should be minimum 1 page, maximum 2 page long, 1.5 spaced with 12pt. type and 1" margins. Reviews should cover the material presented by the lecturer, emphasizing more highly content, working method and style, with less emphasis on the personal aspects of the presentation. The review should be written as though for publication - in other words, for a professional reader and you would benefit by consulting art journals and magazines for guidance.

Grades

A quality work represents the highest level of technical and creative acheivement. Students striving for an A will demonstrate exceptional commitment to the assignments, Final project and class participation. They will work beyond the assignment expectations.

A higher level of commitment and working beyond assignment expectations, along with completing all the assignments and participation as well as creative effort tends to be B quality work.

Completing all assignment work on time, competently and in good order and an average level of class participation will result in a C.

Incomplete, late, uncreative assignments, consistent lateness, a low level of participation or attendance may result in a D grade.

Incomplete work, missed assignments, consistent lateness or absences, incomplete final will result in a failing grade. I suggest that if you feel you are in this territory, you take the responsibility to come to me to discuss the matter as soon as you are able.

Students working on individual projects will have the responsibility of bringing their work in for evaluation on "in progress" days, but are also expected to set up individual meetiings on a regular basis. The more I see your work and that you are working, the better you will do in the course. Those studens who leave their work to the end, or do not demonstrate their explorations won't fare as well. I higher level of participation will be expected from the group.
